A tornado crashed through Kansas City. Dorothy and Toto, a dog, are brought to a land called Oz. How will they get home? Along the way, they met The Tin Woodman, Scarecrow and the Lion. The book was first published in 1900.
Dorothy lived with a farmer and his wife. They were Uncle Henry and Aunt Em. There was a trapdoor in case there was a cyclone. Henry was a serious man and Dorothy was an orphan. The dog, Toto, entertained Dorothy much. Currently a cyclone came. The house rose in the air. Luckily, Toto and her were safe.
Apparently, after the cyclone, the surroundings became more beautiful. She bumped into 3 men and a woman. They were all very weird. They were from the land of Munchkins and they claimed Dorothy killed the witch to set themselves free. 2 feet with pointed toes were trapped under the house due to the cyclone. The woman admitted she was the Witch of the North. The ones in the North and South are good. Now that the one in the East was killed, there was only the one in the West. The land of Oz is not civilized. Oz was a wizard. The dead witch left behind a pair of silver shoes, which had mystical powers. It was not safe to return to her Uncle and Aunt and Dorothy was stuck. An old lady encouraged her to explore the City of Emeralds and it would be a long walk.
Dorothy and Toto were ready to set off. She wore the silver shoes. She bumped into a few hospitable fiddlers who treated her well. Boq thought that she killed the witch. Boq invited her over to her house. Soon, Dorothy saw a scarecrow. The scarecrow complained he was tired. Dorothy removed his pole and he was free. The scarecrow wanted to head to Oz too. The scarecrow was afraid of a lighted match. The scarecrow didn’t need to eat. They adjourned to a nice cottage for the night
That is true. You see, I don’t mind my legs and arms and body being stuffed, because I cannot get hurt. If anyone treads on my toes or sticks a pin into me, it doesn’t matter, for I can’t feel it. But I do not want people to call me a fool, and if my head stays stuffed with straw instead of with brains, as yours is, how am I ever to know anything? – The Scarecrow
If you (Scarecrow) only had brains in your head you would be as good a man as any of them, and a better man than some of them. Brains are the only things worth having in this world, no matter whether one is a crow or a man. – Old Crow
It must be inconvenient to be made of flesh, for you must sleep, and eat and drink. However, you have brains, and it is worth a lot of bother to be able to think properly. – The Scarecrow
They found a tinman chopping wood. The tin man wanted his joints to be oiled. He was grateful that the others saved his life. He wanted a heart from Oz. The tin man wanted to join their party. Using his ability, the tin man cleared a portion of the forest for them to walk. The tin man wanted a heart more than a brain. He wanted to get married. Surprisingly, he was once normal but the tin man was injured and his body parts were replaced with tin.
I shall take the heart, for brains do not make one happy, and happiness is the best thing in this world. – The Tin Man
The Lion, from nowhere, attacked the Tin Man and the Scarecrow. Dorothy slapped him. The lion admitted he was a coward. The lion liked to roar although deep inside him, he was a coward. He wanted courage from Oz. The Tinman stepped on a beetle on the road and cried. This caused his jaws to rust and be sealed shut. The scarecrow oiled his mouth and he was okay again.
Then, if you don’t mind, I’ll go with you. For my life is simply unbearable without a bit of courage. – The Lion
The Lion was willing to hunt to provide food for Dorothy. The scarecrow brought back nuts. The Lion volunteered to bring the rest across a ditch. Finally, all of them were across safely. Kalidahs lived nearby. They were attacked by them. Luckily, the Tin Man severed the wood across the bridge so that the Kalidahs couldn’t cross. The tin man helped to build a raft so that they could all cross a river.
The scarecrow was stranded in the middle of the river. Suddenly, they saw a stork. The stork rescued the Scarecrow from the river. The scent of the flowers made the girl, the dog and the lion sleepy. However the lion was too heavy and the Scarecrow and the Tin Man decided to abandon him. The tin man killed the wildcat who was trying to kill a mouse. She ordered all the other mice to listen to the Tin Man.
All of them continued on their journey. Everything was green in Oz and people weren’t so friendly. They found a room for the night. No one has managed to see the real Oz. They were finally at Emerald City. Apparently everyone had to prepare a new set of slides. All of them wore the shapes.
There were many people dressed in green. Everyone was scared of the Lion. They reached the Palace of the Oz. Oz wanted to meet them individually and only once per day. Dorothy and company were brought to rooms. The room was beautiful. The next morning, the green maiden went to fetch Dorothy. She now entered the Throne Room. Oz was a big head, without any body. Oz wanted her to kill the Wicked Witch of the West. The next day, the Scarecrow saw Oz. Oz took the same of a beautiful lady. The next day, when the Tin Woodman visited, he took the form of a terrible Beast. The last day, when the Lion visited, he took the form of a ball of fire. All of them would set out the next day and look for the Witch.
You have no right to expect me to send you back to Kansas unless you do something for me in return. In this country everyone must pay for everything he gets. If you wish me to use my magic power to send you home again you must do something for me first. Help me and I will help you. – Oz
The Woodman and the Tin Woodman kept watch at night as they didn’t need to sleep. The witch commanded the wolves to tear them apart. The Tin Man killed all of them. Now, the witch summoned crows. The Scarecrow twisted all of their necks. Now black bees were in the air. The scarecrow covered the lion, Toto and Dorothy with straw, thus protecting them. The bees died after stinging the Tin Woodman. Next, the Winkies were attacking them with spears. The witch used a charm from the golden cup. The Winged Monkeys were summoned again for the last time. The Tinman was dented after being dropped from a great height. The Scarecrow was disintegrated. The Lion was captured. After the monkeys saw Dorothy’s scar, they brought her to the witch without harming her. Dorothy was made to work in the witch’s kitchen. Dorothy and the Lion couldn’t find a way to escape. She was starting to feel unhappy. Now, the witch was thinking of stealing the silver shoes. Finally, she stole one of the shoes. Dorothy splashed water over her and she started shrinking. Water would kill her. The witch ceased to exist.
Dorothy set the Lion free. All the winkies were no longer slaves anymore. They sought to rescue the Tin Woodman and the Scarecrow. The tinsmiths helped to straighten him up. The tin man was extremely touched that he was saved. Scarecrow’s clothes were found in a tree and the Tin Woodman helped to chop down the tree. The scarecrow was saved too. Everyone bade farewell to the Winkies. Dorothy was intrigued with the Golden Cap and took it with her before leaving.
The party got lost on the way back. They didn’t seem to be heading back to Oz. Dorothy was told by the mice to follow the instructions on the cap and they could be brought to Oz. The Winged Monkeys carried them to the City of Emeralds.
Oz did not summon for them despite their feat of destroying the witch. Finally, all of them entered the Throne Room and a voice boomed from the ceiling. Everyone was angry that Oz didn’t keep to his promises. Finally, Oz revealed his true self. He was a little poor old man. Oz explained how he used the Great Head to trick others. Also, he admitted he was just a common man. Everyone proclaimed that he was a humbug. He explained how he got the people to build the whole city and how he was a balloonist previously. Oz didn’t have any magical powers. A heart makes people unhappy. Oz was now thinking of a plan on how to save them and give them what they want.
You don’t need brains, Mr Scarecrow. You are learning something every day. A baby has brains, but it doesn’t know much. Experience is the only thing that brings knowledge, and the longer you are on Earth the more experience you are sure to get. – The Wizard of Oz
You have plenty of courage, Lion. I am sure. All you need is confidence in yourself. There is no living thing that is not afraid when it faces danger. True courage is in facing danger when you are afraid, and that kind of courage you have in plenty. – The Wizard of Oz
The Scarecrow was given brains the next day. Oz gave the Tin Woodman a heart. The Lion was given a green potion called courage and he drank it instantly. Bringing Dorothy back to Kansas was a tough ask. All of her friends were contented as they got what they want. Oz figured out a way for her to cross the desert. He thought of making a balloon. Oz wanted to follow her and work in a circus in Kansas. Scarecrow would be the new King of the town. The Wizard left without Dorothy as she missed the takeoff as she was looking for Toto.
Dorothy still wanted to live in Kansas. The Winged Monkeys didn’t know how to fly to Kansas. The soldier advised Dorothy to approach Glinda, the witch of the South. All of them agreed to follow her. The route would be treacherous and long. The trees attacked their party and they were lucky to escape. The Tin Man made a ladder to cross an obstacle. From the top of the ladder, they saw the town. There were pretty small houses along the way. There were really small people. The people were made of China.
The party left the China country and were now in a disagreeable country. The Tiger complained of a wild fierce beast on the island. It was a great spider. The Lion attacked it when it was asleep and killed it. The Lion was their new King.
The travelers came upon a hill. A short man with a stretchable neck stopped them. They were the army of Hammer Heads. The travelers used the Winged Monkeys to get over them. Dorothy could not summon them anymore.
The party reached Glinda’s castle. She was super pretty. In exchange for Glinda’s help, Dorothy gave her the golden cap. The Glinda would use the 3 wishes to place the Lion, the Scarecrow and the Tin Woodman in their respective forests to rule. Dorothy hugged the animals tightly. Instantly after tapping the silver shoes 3 times, she was brought home.
