Ten things you should know before you buy a chronograph. They are often known as tool watches. You can time almost anything and you need not time a race. Most chronographs can’t be operated underwater. Legibility is very important. Decide whether you need to look at your chronograph in the dark. In-house movements are typically integrated and not modular. Some of them offer fine finishing. They control every step of the manufacturing process. ETA movements are sturdy and parts can be replaced easily. The top grade is the COSC-certified model. However, they are unlikely to have any hand-finishing. If you want to view a nice movement, get a one with the integrated movement. Modular movements are where a chronograph mechanism is mounted on a separate plate, usually on a dial side. Some chronographs use column wheels to control start, stop and reset functions. In a modular chronograph, the movement is not that smooth. Column wheels are good and are usually found in luxury chronographs. The ETA 7750 uses cam switching, which is also very reliable. However, the column wheel looks great on a display case-back. Some watches use a vertical clutch system or a horizontal meshing system. However, the horizontal meshing system is more attractive to look at. The frequency of vibrations indicate how accurate is the chronograph. For example, at 28,800 vph, the movement can measure up to 1/8 of a second. At 36,000 vph, the movement can measure up to 1/10 of a second. The TAG Heuer’s Mikrograph can measure up to 1/100th of a second as it uses two mainspring barrels, two-wheel trains and two escapements. The more exotic chronographs have the flyback or rattrapante (double chronograph) features. The rattrapante has two second hands, one on top of another. It can measure splits and two events simultaneously. Do you need a date complication on your watch? Some chronographs have scales to increase its usefulness. For example, there is a pulsograph, tachymeter (measure speed), telemeter (measure distance).
Three Things to Know About the Patek Philippe Chiming Jump Hour. The Grandmaster Chime was made for PP’s 175th anniversary. It made a huge statement in the watch industry. The Chiming Jump Hour has a reference 5275P—001. It has 438 parts and it will chime at the top of each hour. It is unique that the chiming is only powered by 1 mainspring. The reason why this is possible is that the movement contains modern materials like silicone. The hours, minutes and seconds will jump simultaneously.
